Top 10 Most Frequently Asked Questions
What is Iridology? Why should I take the time to learn it?
Iridology is the study of the iris, or colored part, of the eye. This structure has detailed fibers and pigmentation that reflects information about our physical and psychological makeup. It identifies inherited dispositions (how our body reacts to our environment and what symptoms to expect), and future challenges (where we are likely to have more problems as we age). It also helps identify inherited emotional patterns, which can create or maintain physical symptoms, as well as identify lessons or challenges and gifts or talents available to us.
I have learned Iridology from another source. Why should I learn from IIPA?
Over the years, Iridologists with different backgrounds and training have developed different terminology and interpretations of iris signs. This has led to much confusion between Iridologists around the world. How did this get started?
While eyes have been a focus in civilizations throughout the ages, “modern” Iridology got its start just over 100 years ago. In the late 1800’s, a physician from Hungary and another from Sweden began observing eyes and organizing their findings. This process of observation and correlating has been slow, but it established a foundation for others to build on. The first book on Iridology in America, by an emigrated Austrian physician, was printed in 1904. This was followed by the works of N.D.s and other naturopathic oriented M.D.s.
Is Iridology a legally recognized practice?
Iridology operates in a gray area in North America. In general, there are no laws defining or regulating the practice. In Europe (especially Germany) it is more recognized and routinely used by natural medicine practitioners. It is important to understand that Iridology is an assessment tool, not a therapy. Using it improperly by naming disease states, diagnosing disease, etc. is inappropriate because it can be construed as practicing medicine without a license, and it is not correctly applying the information provided by the iris. Therefore, it is critically important that iridologists be well- educated in Iridology and practice in an appropriate manner.
